Canvas Tools

Infinite Painter's virtual canvas has many advantages over a traditional canvas. Can your stretched linen canvas flip like a mirror, rotate 360 degrees without getting paint on your fingers, or turn itself black and white mid-painting to help you check your values? Infinite Painter is not here to replace your passion for real-life painting, but our tools can help you generate amazing concepts for your next traditional masterpiece!

The Navigator

The Navigator tool is designed to guide you through the painting process, no matter where you are on the canvas. With the Navigator active, you can get a miniature view of your artwork, which allows you to judge how things look from afar even when you're zoomed in and working on the details.

Here's how to use the Navigator tool:

  • From the tool menu, tap the Navigator icon to activate the mini window.
  • Use two fingers to move the Navigator around or scale the window to fit comfortably on the side of your screen.
  • Double tap the window to flip it, giving you an alternative perspective that can help you better judge your art.

Pro Tip: Tap the gear icon in the top left corner to access the Navigator settings. Here you can turn the image into black and white, which helps you double-check your values in real-time.

Flip the canvas

The old masters used to have mirrors in their studios so they could see their artworks in reverse. This is key to getting fresh eyes on your image and will help you see awkward mistakes that may go overlooked.

  • In the Canvas section of the Tools menu, tap Flip to reverse your image!
  • You can enable Flip as a gesture, or drag and drop the tool icon onto your custom toolbar at the top of the screen for easy access.
  • To use Flip as a gesture, tap the three dots at the top right corner of your screen to access the settings menu. Scroll down and choose Flip for your choice of Gesture.

Fit to screen

Artists tend to zoom into their art a lot… Finding your way back to a full screen view of your artwork is only a click away! The Fit tool will fill your screen with the canvas so you can view your image as a whole.

  • In the tool menu, find Fit.
  • Tap Fit to instantly zoom out when painting close up details, or, if you’ve lost your canvas somewhere off the side of the screen, Fit will get your canvas back into view!

Pro Tip: With two fingers on the screen, you can use a pinch gesture to snap the canvas into full screen mode.

Lock navigation

You may want to treat your tablet like a sheet of paper, without all the zooming in or rotating the canvas. To get a more natural and stable feel to the workspace, try out the lock feature!

  • Again, open up the tool menu and find Lock to hold the position of your canvas in place.

Pro Tip: You can lock your device screen to stop the app from flipping when you rotate your tablet. Go online and search “how to lock the screen rotation” for your specific device.

So you know how to control your virtual canvas now, do you think it’ll help you get a better view of your artwork, would you ever turn an Infinite Painter sketch into a real life painting on canvas? If so, be sure to share your traditional art in the community!
